What is hemp seed oil? (How it differs from CBD oil).
Say "hemp" and most people have a question queued up — is this the same as CBD? Is it legal? Is it going to do anything unexpected to my dog? Fair questions. Hemp is a broad plant family with a few very different products living under it, and the labelling doesn't always make that clear. So before we talk about what hemp seed oil does, let's clear up what it actually is — and where it fits alongside the rest of the hemp family.
Same plant, different parts, different jobs.
Hemp produces more than one useful ingredient, and it's worth knowing which one you're looking at.
CBD oil and full-spectrum hemp extract are drawn from the plant's flowers and leaves, where its cannabinoids — including CBD — are concentrated. These extracts are formulated for a specific purpose and used in products designed around that purpose.
Hemp seed oil is a different thing entirely: cold-pressed from the seeds, which don't carry meaningful cannabinoid content. What comes out the other end is closer, botanically, to a nut oil — no THC, no CBD, no psychoactive effect, for you or your dog. It's chosen for a specific job too: what it does for skin and coat, day to day.

So what's actually in the bottle?
Cold-pressed hemp seed oil is one of the more balanced plant oils going: roughly a 3:1 ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids, which is close to what nutritionists consider ideal for skin and coat health. It also carries linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, and a solid dose of vitamin E.
What that translates to, practically: an oil that helps support the skin's natural barrier, sits lightly rather than greasy, and works as well on human skin after a big day outside as it does on a dog's coat after a muddy one. It's not a miracle ingredient — it's a well-balanced fatty acid profile doing what well-balanced fatty acid profiles do.
Will it get me — or my dog — high?
No. Hemp seed oil is legal in Australia and widely used in food and skincare. Because it's pressed from the seed rather than the flower, there's no meaningful THC content in it at all — it won't produce a high, won't show up as a concern on a drug test, and won't affect your dog's behaviour beyond, well, having nicer skin and a softer coat.
